Awashima Island

Awashima Island is just off the coast of Kagawa and comprises three small islands connected by narrow strips of land. Japan’s first maritime school opened on the island in 1897 and is now open to visitors as the Awashima Maritime Museum. Jonoyama Observation deck near the summit of Mt. Jono (222 m) affords views of the islands and the Seto Ohashi Bridge. In autumn, you might spot finless porpoises near the ferry route between Suda Port and Awashima Island. The Awashima Momote Festival is held each year on the first Sunday in March at Awashima Shrine to herald the arrival of spring. A highlight of the festival is an archery competition.
