Ganryujima Island
A small island in the Kanmon Straits in Shimonoseki, was the scene of a famous duel in 1612. Two famous swordsmen and long-term rivals, Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro battled on the uninhabited island of Ganryujima, and Miyamoto prevailed. Ganryujima is just 1.6 kilometers in circumference and can be accessed in around 10 minutes by boat from Karato Pier, near Karato Market. There is a walking trail around the island and a statue of the two swordsmen in action.
