Yashima Plateau
Yashima is a volcanic plateau on the east side of Takamatsu Port in Kagawa that affords views of Takamatsu City and the Seto Inland Sea. Yashima Temple on the plateau summit is the 84th site on the Shikoku Pilgrimage (Shikoku Henro) of 88 temples in Shikoku. The New Yashima Aquarium and the Yashima Skyway scenic road are also on the summit.
Dan no Ura Cove on the eastern side of Yashima was the site of the Battle of Yashima (1185), a decisive battle in the Genpei War (1180–1185) between the rival Taira and Minamoto samurai clans. There are many sites of interest around the cove, such as the Inori Iwa, or “prayer rock,” where famed samurai archer Nasu no Yoichi (c. 1169– c. 1232) on the Minamoto side, is said to have prayed for his arrows to strike true.
