Saturday Hula on Suo-Oshima Island
The island of Suo-Oshima in Yamaguchi Prefecture has strong ties to Hawaii. During the Meiji era (1868–1912) around 4,000 islanders emigrated to Hawaii, and many Hawaiian traditions have been shared. Hula dancing is practiced on the island, and on summer Saturdays from mid-July to late August, performances are held at venues in Suo-Oshima, with Hula groups visiting from around Japan. Watching the performances is free of charge. Advance registration is required for participants.
