The historical townscape has a mixture of merchant houses, teahouses, shrines, and temples, as well as infrastructure for merchant ships, including docks, a lighthouse, and remains of stone piers. Stroll around the preservation area to experience the charming atmosphere of a bygone time. The island is part of Kure City in Hiroshima and is connected by bridges to the neighboring islands of Toyoshima and Okamura. Mitarai is accessible from Kure by car, or on an island-hopping cruise.
