Takehara Townscape Conservation Area

The town of Takehara prospered during the Edo period (1603–1867) as a center of salt production and many traditional wooden merchant houses remain. Stroll the historical streets to glimpse the past through well-preserved facades and decorative latticework. Some of the former merchant houses have been repurposed as restaurants, cafes, and shops selling traditional local crafts. Takehara comes alive during seasonal events like the springtime Hinamatsuri festival when Hina dolls are displayed, and the autumn illumination festival when the Conservation Area is lit with bamboo candles.
