Hyogo Himeji Castle

This castle is frequently referred to as "Shirasagi-jo" or "White Heron Castle." The brilliant white exterior looks as if a white heron is spreading it's wings. Himeji Castle is considered a masterpiece of woodcrafted design, with eight buildings such as "Tenshu" (the main castle) and "Watariyagura" (the roofed passage) , designated as National Treasure. Seventy four other buildings are listed as Important Cultural Property. The site was designated as the first World Cultural Heritage site in Japan in 1993, along with Horyu-ji Temple. Approximately a thousand cherry blossoms bloom in spring, making this location very popular among visitors.
