The Legacy of the Kyogoku Clan

Marugame Castle was constructed in 1597. Later, the Kyogoku Clan became the lords of the castle and developed the surrounding castle town. The Kyogoku Clan were known for their appreciation of culture and the arts, a spirit that continues to resonate with the people of Marugame today.

Within the castle grounds stands the Enjyukaku Bekkan detached palace, meticulously reconstructed using elements from a Edo-era feudal lord's residence. However, as time took its toll on the structure, the local community, witnessing the gradual decay of this precious cultural heritage, felt compelled to act.

Driven by their deep respect for the Kyogoku Clan's legacy and a desire to preserve their cultural heritage, they conceived the idea of a Castle Stay.

A portion of the proceeds from each Castle Stay is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Marugame Castle’s Main Keep and other cultural assets.

By partaking in this unique experience, you will not only contribute to the preservation of history but also indulge in the extraordinary role of Lord of the castle.

The Marugame City Tourism Association prefers the term "Castle Experience": a truly immersive and memorable experience, where guests can connect with the history, culture, and warmth of Marugame Castle.

Your journey begins at Marugame Station, where your concierge awaits with a traditional rickshaw. Step into this timeless mode of transport and head toward Marugame Castle. At 4:00 PM, as you pass through the impressive second gate on foot, you will be transported to another world, greeted by the resounding beats of taiko drums. This marks the beginning of your distinguished Castle Experience.

A powerful performance by traditional taiko drummers welcomes you to the castle, their exuberant rhythm echoing through the grounds, transcending 400 years of history.

These drums are more than just musical performance instruments.

They have long served a vital role in marking the passage of time. Every day at noon, the drums are struck nine times, just as they were in the Edo period.

The sound of the drums emanating from the Taiko Gate is a testament to Marugame Castle's enduring presence as a "Castle of Sound," deeply intertwined with the lives of local people.

This Edo-period ritual is a rare example in Japan of a castle still marking time with daily drumbeats, a true embodiment of cultural heritage preservation.
