Zenigata Sunae Sand Art

See a huge sand sculpture of a traditional coin in Kotohiki Park near Ariake Beach in Kannonji, Kagawa Prefecture.

The sand art is visible from an observation deck in the park. Measuring 122 meters by 90 meters, with a circumference of 345 meters, the coin is oval at ground level. Viewed from the observation deck, it appears circular. The coin depicted is one that was in circulation during the Edo period (1603–1867). It is said that the sand art was first made in 1633 for the ruler of the Takamatsu domain (present-day Kagawa Prefecture). The sand art is rebuilt twice a year. Viewing the coin is believed to reward observers with a long and healthy life, and abundant riches.
