Kintaikyo Cormorant Fishing

It is said that cormorant fishing has been practiced near Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni for around 400 years. This ancient method of capturing ayu (sweetfish) unfolds under the cover of night, illuminated by the warm glow of firelight. Skilled cormorant masters in traditional garb guide their trained birds to catch ayu from boats on the river. Visitors can watch the spectacle on summer nights between June and mid-September.
