There are car rental companies in most cities across Japan. Find a car rental office here. You need to be at least 18 years old to drive in Japan, and have an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) from your country of residence. Most rental cars have an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) card fixed to the dashboard or windscreen to pay expressway tolls automatically as you drive.

You can purchase a Japan Rail Pass, Setouchi Area Pass, or JR-West All Area Pass online before you arrive. These cover the Shinkansen (bullet train), most other JR trains, and some special sightseeing trains, plus some bus and ferry trips. If you are driving, the San’in‐Setouchi‐Shikoku Expressway Pass will give you discounts on expressway tolls.
