Rokko Musical Box Museum & Gardens MORINONE: A Sensory Journey of Sight, Sound, and Touch

Escape the Urban Noise on Mount Rokko

Mount Rokko lies between the cities of Osaka and Kobe and is cherished by locals as the birthplace of golf in Japan, as well as for many other recreational outdoor activities. The magnificent “10-million-dollar" night view from the peak is another highlight that draws visitors, along with Mount Rokko’s proximity to Arima Onsen, known as one of Japan's oldest hot springs. Easy access by public transport, including cable car and bus, makes it a popular destination for many people seeking a quick escape from urban life.

Rokko Musical Box Museum & Gardens MORINONE is an experiential museum nestled in this lush, natural environment. Here, special, healing time flows, centered on the theme of "sound" woven by music and nature.

Automated Musical Instruments Resonate Across Time

The museum originally opened in 1994 as an indoor cultural facility on Mount Rokko, where most facilities focus on outdoor leisure. The museum is dedicated to automated musical instruments, such as music boxes and organs, collected mainly from Western Europe and the United States. Many of these precious instruments are over 100 years old, often unseen even by people in their countries of origin, charming visitors as a rare cultural experience.

A particular highlight is the large Decap Dance Organ "De Kempenaer," made in Belgium in 1938. This giant instrument, adorned with colorful electric lights, resembles a dream stage. Its powerful sound once captivated people in countless dance halls. Amazingly, it can play even modern hit songs by simply changing the perforated cardboard "books". Conversely, ancient songs whose titles are lost can be played exactly as they sounded then, provided the original books remain in functional condition.

When an instrument from a bygone era plays modern music, or echoes its original sound across time, it creates an unparalleled emotional experience by connecting past and present through music, on a journey beyond time and space.

These "Concerts Without Musicians", are curated by the museum staff with the audience in mind. As the instruments rotate, even repeat visitors can discover something new each time. However, these old instruments are extremely delicate, so even popular pieces are played sparingly to prevent wear. Maintenance requires meticulous care by specialized technicians, of whom there are only a few in Japan. Thanks to their dedication, these precious antique instruments continue to function today.

" The Path of sounds" Composed by Nature

In 2021, Rokko Musical Box Museum & Gardens MORINONE  expanded its garden area, complementing the indoor museum exhibition and performance spaces, and allowing visitors to further enjoy Mount Rokko’s natural environment.

The garden permanently exhibits selected works from the Kobe Rokko Meets Contemporary Art festival. In 2025, Yoshitomo Nara's "Peace Head" was permanently acquired as a symbol of Mount Rokko.

The natural garden is designed around the concept of "sound". In addition to the automated instrument sounds, visitors can also appreciate the music of nature: the rustling of trees, the songs of birds such as Uguisu (Japanese Bush Warblers), and the chorus of Higurashi (Evening Cicadas). Wind-up Musical boxes (called “orgels” in Japan) placed throughout the garden play beautiful melodies when the handles are turned by hand. This experience of manually creating music without using electricity embodies the museum's philosophy of harmonizing with nature and sustainably preserving culture. This unique garden soundscape blends naturally with the ever-changing seasonal landscapes of Mount Rokko.

Make your own Musical Box

Rokko Musical Box Museum & Gardens MORINONE  invites visitors to not only listen to sounds, but to create their own unique Musical box. Select the melody, casing, and workshop level (General or Advanced). Artisans are always present in the facility, where you can observe their work. Staff offer careful instruction, so that the process is accessible and enjoyable even for beginners. Take home your own handmade Musical box as a souvenir of your time in Mount Rokko. The Musical box workshop is popular with families during summer vacation and as a DIY project for children.

Heartfelt Hospitality

This musical museum aims to be attentive to every visitor. After concerts, staff answer audience questions and share stories about the instruments, fostering warm interaction. The museum welcomes everyone, from children to adults.

Rokko Musical Box Museum & Gardens MORINONE is a place where you can actively engage your senses by listening, seeing, and touching. Whether you love music, seek healing in nature, or wish to satisfy your intellectual curiosity, it offers an enriching experience for all.
